Startling Fire Statistics

In 2008 U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,451,500 fires. These fires resulted in 3,320 civilian fire fatalities, 16,705 civilian fire injuries and an estimated $15,478,000,000 in direct property loss. (The direct property loss includes the California Wildfires 2008 with an estimated property loss of $1,400,000,000.) There was a civilian fire death every 158 minutes and a civilian fire injury every 31 minutes in 2008.

In 2008 home fires caused 2,755, or 83%, of the civilian fire deaths. 403,000 fires or 78% of all structure fires occurred in residential properties.

In 2008 every 22 seconds, a fire department responded to a fire somewhere in the nation. A fire occurred in a structure at the rate of one every 61 seconds, and in particular a residential fire occurs every 78 seconds. (Source: National Fire Protection Association Fire Loss in the U.S. 2008.)

What is Nixle?

The Fire District, Woodland Park Police Department and the Teller County Sheriff's Office are now using Nixle!  What is Nixle you might wonder?  It's a web-based notification system much like Twitter to send instant important information right to you through your email, your cell and/or another mobile device.  We can use it to send information about road closures, like for our Christmas Parade, information about a fire incident and community based information like when H1N1 shots might be offered.  Please sign up and have your friends sign up too!  It's the best way to stay in touch with your emergency services!  Click on the link to the left and check it out!

Tower 1 Goes In Service

On June 1st, 2009 Northeast Teller County Fire Protection District put a much needed piece of fire apparatus into service.  The 95-foot Sutphen aerial platform truck was christened “Tower 1” and will be standing by at Station 1 to respond to multi-story and large building fires, as well as other rescue emergencies.  Tower 1 was donated to NETCFPD by the Eagle River Fire Protection District and the Beaver Creek Metropolitan District in Eagle County, Colorado where it had been replaced by a new piece of equipment. The Board of Directors for Eagle River decided to donate “Tower 1” to a Colorado fire department that could demonstrate a significant need for this type of apparatus.  NETCFPD Fire Chief Nick Lauria presented the District’s case to the ERFPD Board of Directors that our current ladder truck had to be retired for safety reasons due to its age and we could not afford to replace it at a cost of more than $800,000.  After considering proposals from 5 other Colorado fire departments, ERFPD chose NETCFPD as the recipient of this valuable piece of fire fighting equipment.  Tower 1 made its public debut at Woodland Park’s Christmas parade and after completing required safety inspections, testing, maintenance and crew training, it is ready to respond to Woodland Park and Teller County emergencies.

Upcoming Events

REDZONE SURVEYS

In the Summer of 2010, you may see members of the Northeast Teller County Fire Corps out and about in the district.  We will be conducting surveys of properties to assess the wildland fire risk to homes especially in the rural areas of the district.  Members will use a software program called "Redzone" to assess the level of risk by answering numerous questions relating to the defensible space around your home.  We would like our work to coincide with the Woodland Park Healthy Forest Initiative.  Click here to view the map!  The data is collected and kept at the district to help us protect your home in the event of a wildland fire.  If you have any questions regarding this project, don't hesitate to contact any members of the team or call station 1 (Bus. Line 719-687-1866).

New Website

Welcome to the new web site for the Northeast Teller County Fire Protection District.  We hope you take a moment to navigate through it and let us know if was helpful to you.  We love suggestions so please use the contact section and let the fire chief know what suggestions you may have to serve you better.

In other news, we are preparing for a new year of challenges while facing an uncertain economy.  We continue to develop our training program so we can meet the challenges of new technology especially in the areas of building construction and new automobile technology.  We are also gearing up for wildland fire season since it is really just around the corner for us.
